When AI meets UI: Designing content systems for hybrid interfaces

AI isn’t replacing interfaces — it’s being layered on top of them. Many teams are now building hybrid products that combine structured UI flows with conversational and generative elements. The problem? Most content systems were designed for deterministic environments: fixed states, defined paths, predictable outcomes. AI systems are probabilistic — they are dynamic, intent-driven, and inherently variable. When we layer AI on top, without rethinking the architecture, things break: Tone drifts, responsibilities blur, and structured UI collides with AI-generated responses.

This session explores what changes when products move from deterministic to hybrid systems. Hannah Barrett will draw on her enterprise-scale experience designing conversational systems and AI-enabled tools, and share tips on diagnosing breakdowns, aligning UX writing and conversation design, and structuring shared voice and governance that support both structured and generative layers.

In this session, you’ll learn how to:

  • Distinguish between deterministic (state-based) and probabilistic (intent-driven) content systems — and understand why that distinction matters.
  • Identify common failure points where structured UI and AI-generated responses collide.
  • Understand how guidelines and governance need to change in AI-enabled systems.
  • Reimagine the role of content designers as system architects rather than flow writers.
